HIDE YOUR EYES, WE'RE GONNA SHINE TONIGHTSUB-ATOMIC NEVER GET THE BEST OF ME On easy days, her father was too busy at his stall with the servants to notice if she slipped away for longer than just a few moments long enough to look at the jewelry stall across the way. He was so overwhelmed with the cusomters and the merchandise that she could get away for a lot longer than that, weaving her way through the crowds and the chatter and peeking at stalls as she went.
And, well, Iuliana loved spending time in the marketplace. It reminded her of when she was a child - when her father brought her here for the first time that she could remember, and he would let her hold the lovely necklaces he got from the far countries to the West and North or touch the exotic silk carpets and incense he bought from the Persians. He was a successful merchant; he sold quality stock, and he sold it for a good price - but he could have reasonably higher prices because his stock was of such god quality. So it all worked out in the end! Iuliana hoped that one day she would be running the stand, or that at least whoever ended up being her husband woud.
She, of course, would try to help run as it best she could.
Iuliana made her way through the crowd a little further, brushing back strands of ash-blonde hair, as she slipped and wavered in and out of people. But there was a strange feeling all of a sudden - a nestling, in her money pouch pocket? What in the world could that possibly be? She stopped in a slightly open area, and with the lightning fast reflexes of what could possibly be a jungle cat (or a very annoyed merchant's daughter), pulled her money bag out from it's not-so-safe spot on her hip, whirling around to beat the bag over her attacker's head.
"Fiend, villain!" she exclaimed, giving the assailant another hearty smack. "How dare you!"

YOU AND ME, RENDEZVOUS?
days could be so dull sometimes. parties tended to take place in the evenings, so that was generally when he worked and earned his keep, outperforming all those pretty girls who moved like there was a fishing pole up their behinds. which was probably quite true for some of them, felix mused as he scuttled up the side of a taberna, hands finding the smallest nooks and crannies to pull his lean body up, and proceeding to walk most nonchalantly along the roof's lip when he reached it. no doubt that was what caused their faces to pull such ugly expressions when it was his time to shine - couldn't possibly be his amazing talent for any kind of dance and his natural sense of balance, ha ha! he reached the roof. from here, he could see the tabernae novae from up here - and a little more. a smile of satisfaction spread across his face as he watched the busy shoppers down below.
felix struck a pose on the edge of the roof, "i feel like the egyptian god, ra! ruler of everything he surveys!" he paused for a second, frown clouding his happy expression, "or was he the sun god?" felix shrugged. it was of little consequence to him. he was a roman citizen and followed rome's customs - though that was usually just when it suited him. felix opened his mouth to add something about having a shiny face like the sun - and promptly lost the natural balance, almost falling off the building. uh, clearly a sign from the gods he should get down. which, for once, felix decided to comply with, and that had absolutely nothing to do with the fact he might have just spotted someone who looked like a nice target for a spot of, well, relief. monetary relief. perhaps a necklace or brooch too, felix conceeded as his feet touched the ground lightly and he darted into the crowd.
the other citizens paid the scrawny kid with his mess of badly cut black hair little heed - not that felix wanted the attention right now. he had other things on his mind than looking for potential patrons. so much money to gather in, so little time. he was an umbra, a simulacrum, he was gone! well, figuratively speaking. felix's hand snaked out towards the rather fat looking purse that the girl in question happened to be wearing, fingertips just brushing i-when it was whipped round at lightning speed and connected with his skull. felix gave out a sound somewhere between a squeak and a squeal of painful displeasure, and skittered backwards, the picture of innocence once again. "tha-heus-t hurt!," as if was anything by his fault. felix stopped just out of range of the purse wielding maniac - he meant that in the most endearing fashion, of course - and fixed her with a mournful, sad little face. "that was mean," felix continued somewhat reproachfully, looking for all the empire like a little kid.

HIDE YOUR EYES, WE'RE GONNA SHINE TONIGHTSUB-ATOMIC NEVER GET THE BEST OF ME Iuliana was about to give the little pest another sharp whack in the head when she stopped to study his face. Hm, didn't he look familiar? There was something about him - I mean, she didn't normally just forget faces like that unless they were unimportant; so what was it about him that made her think she'd met him before? Was it the hair, the eyes? There was something, something, but she couldn't figure out what!
Despite the mounting frustration because she couldn't figure out where she'd seen him before, Iuliana gave another (thoughtful) whack at the boy's head. Served him right, anyway! No one tried to pick pocket Iuliana Calidus and got away with it without a few bruises. She'd been raised right, at any rate - her father was a merchant who taught her from a young age how to protect the money you made. After all, what kind of merchant didn't have money? The poor kind, that's what - and Iuliana would not stand to be a poor kind.
"You're the boy from the party!" she suddenly exclaimed, a bit of gleeful tone in her feathery words. Spoke like a true lady, indeed. With a bit of demureness, she tucked her money pouch back neatly on her hip and eyed him now with vivid blue eyes. "What was your name? Fe- Fe something." She tilted her head at him and tucked a strand of hair from her face. "Felix, that's what it was! Felix, right? You were at the party I went to just a few nights ago!"

YOU AND ME, RENDEZVOUS?
the blow he expected to come did not land - much to felix's surprise, who had been expecting a continued walloping by the puella's rather weighty money pouch - and felix's arms stopped protecting his - probably quite thick - skull, flopping to his side. they hung there awkwardly, before his fingers hooked into the folds of his toga and he assembled himself in a rather prim pose, looking a little put out with the punishment he had received. as he should do, mind! it was not every day that you walked down around the tabernae and got brutally attacked for such a frivolous action. much less expect it. he might wish to admit that stealing a woman's - or anyone's, for that matter - pecunia was rude and an offense, but he was generally not caught. perhaps that lovely liquid from the inn on the outskirts of rome had yet to wear off and his judgement was still a little clouded.
yes, that was it. felix perked up a little at this. that could be remedied! all in good time, though, as the girl in front of him seemed to be looking at him a bit queerly - come to think of it, he returned the queer look of familiarity despite the fact that might gain him another whack if his oculos weren't careful, she did look oddly familiar. recognisable - and, to be honest, people didn't fix in felix's memory unless they were important. he was sure not to have pick pocketed her before; that was something he would no doubt remember. felix raised a dark eyebro-and was, as he guessed, whacked again. felix leaped in the air and gave off a sound that sounded like a combination of someone biting their lip only to exhale and someone's words tripping over their tongue. a rather ungodly sound, he might add. the stab of pain made him wince and little spots appeared everywhere in his vision for a few moments.
"you really are rather cruel!," felix sniffed dramatically. "i could have be an innocent spectator to whoever was playing with your money bag," later in life, he might have made the last word plural in a kind of rather crude innuendo, but there were bits of felix that hadn't quite been ruined by the tests of time yet. tests of time or pretty women. or men! couldn't rule out the fact there were a few homines formosus in the grand old city of rome. he huffed a little and was about to go on when the girl interrupted - he was getting interrupted a lot today, it appeared - him with an exclamation laced with glee. felix's eyes lit up and it clicked with him too. oh yes! he recalled that pretty face now. his arms opened out either side of him, and he positively beamed, before engaging in a little spin on one sandled foot, most elegantly, and stopping when he was facing her again.
"aha! indeed i was," felix's voice was suddenly so friendly and so open, as if he had known this bella puella for years. which, of course, he hadn't. he might have spotted her at the parties of affluent members of roman society, but he was general a bit more preoccupied at those times, earning his wages. "so lovely to know that someone remembered me. felix, it is indeed. agile as a cat, nimble as a nymph, more beautiful and captivating than any other dancer you have ever set eyes on!" he spun once again, two revolutions, narrowly avoiding knocking a senex over, but maintaining his balance perfectly. "how can i be of service, lovely lady?" it occurred to him that he didn't know her name - but he would leap over that bonfire when he came to it. felix struck an elegant pose, one foot pointing with his toes and half bowing to the elegant woman in front of him.
oh he was a changeable boy!

HIDE YOUR EYES, WE'RE GONNA SHINE TONIGHTSUB-ATOMIC NEVER GET THE BEST OF ME "Oh, you certainly could have," Iuliana allowed pleasantly, flashing a most precarious smile and still regarding Felix as if he were the most curious thing in the world. "Unfortunately, both you and I know that you were. instead, a pickpocket trying to relieve a respectable lady of her money purse." And she knew, yes she did, that Felix was the one who was doing it - because who on earth would complain about being hit by a girl that many times?
She was particularly pleased when his emotions changed in the blink of an eye, turning from her assailant into something much more pleasing to the eye. Yes, indeed! What a lovely young man. She remembered him most accurately - in fact, he had been in that party last night, hadn't he? Yes, she was sure of it. Her eyes lit with mirth at his slogan - so catchy! - and she let out a small, ladylike laugh. "A pleasure, Felix," she replied, tying her money purse securely back around her waist and dropping into a slender, willowy curtsy. "You may call me Iuliana. I imagine you were too busy at the party to take names, eh?" A slight arch of the brow occurred, but otherwise she was as ladylike as ever, bow-shaped lips in a willowy smile. With as much grace as one could muster, she held her arm out to him, tilting her head in a most expectant manner.
"Walk with me, sir felix," replied the ever confident iuliana - not asking, but saying. "And try to avoid slipping your fingers onto my purse again." A clever smile lit her features as she began walking, most confidently and most elegantly. "Aside from snatching my purse, what else were you doing in the market today? Planning other shenanigans, I assume?"

YOU AND ME, RENDEZVOUS?
felix chuckled lightly and nodded a little, conceding, "true, true, unfortunately i was that, indeed." she was a shrewd one, for sure. not that he minded hugely. it all added to the atmosphere and the intrigue - much as the mystery had been lifted now as to who they both were. "respectable, you may be, but no lady that i know can wield a bag of money quite like that. not that that is a bad thing, oh no," felix's eyes sparkled as he straightened up - the smile extending from his eyes to his mouth as she laughed gently. most ladylike, indeed. perhaps they could get along just fine. his hands hooked into the sides of his toga again as he returned to his general casual stance - do disrespect to the dulce puella who graced him, a lowly dancer for the masses, with her presence. "ah, the pleasure is all mine!," felix countered airily.
"iuliana - a gorgeous name, if you don't mind me saying," flattery never did anything wrong, providing it was used properly. his eyes glittered a little again with mirth as she went one, "ah, just a little busy, i suppose. just doing my job," and entertaining people, to earn his pecunia. as was his way. you couldn't earn that much simply pickpocketing people - they started to notice after a little while when their purses was always getting lighter when they came by the tabernae. felix accepted the arm that was extended to him and moved to her side, as gallantly as he could manage, feet dancing him over the gap between them. "i would not dream of trying anything of the sort again, madam," felix replied, occupying his hands with her arms and his toga. "not after the beating that i got last time. i am not that stupid."
as they walked, he tilted his head to one side, "ah, not much. just picking up a bit of trade and buying a couple of things. nothing exciting." his eyes slid back to iuliana. "and what about yourself?"
