I never seen a man who looked so all alone
could you use a little company?
Mere stood outside the walls of the circus, looking up at the moon. From inside, she could hear the revelry and carousal. A part of her wished she could join in, but tonight was for work. She smiled to herself. No, it wasn’t necessarily work. She did not think it unpleasant, otherwise she would have quit long ago. Mere enjoyed her business, as did her cliental—wealthy men of whom she knew the ins and outs.
She couldn’t complain.
But, oh, how she yearned for a glass of wine right then. The air chilled her, and gooseflesh popped up everywhere under her toga. She should have been inside by now, warming her body against another's. Even though she usually lurked around the circus, and her clients knew this, business was slow. They must have been honoring their gods by gorging themselves on food. And Mere only thought of the spirits…
She leaned back against the wall. Everyone was inside the circus by now, but she knew if she went inside to search for inebriated men she’d only become distracted by her own vices. She possessed self-control, even if the men in her bed thought otherwise, but the woman liked to party. And when she started up, the only thing that stopped her was the morning light.
Hopefully, something could save Mere from this state of mind.
