tria nomina
The system of naming in the late Republic was one unique to Rome, and one that we'd like to see in use in this role play. It was made of three parts; the praenomen, nomen and cognomen. Roughly, these three parts make up the first name (praenomen), clan name (nomen) and family name (cognomen). For example, the full name of Julius Caesar; Gaius ( praenomen) Iulius ( nomen) Caesar ( cognomen). Need some help with names? Behind the Name has a huge list of Roman names. There is also an extensive table of nomen and cognomen on the Nova Roma site and here. We are aware of some of the other conventions of the naming system, such as women taking on the feminine form of their father's name; but for the sake of the role play, we're not too fussed about that. Also for the sake of the role play, it's more than welcome to use foreign names that may not fit this system (so long as your character is foreign, of course).
