for war and life As well as records of religious and historical importance, the Regia is home to the shrines of Mars and Ops, god of War and of Fertility and the Earth. The shrine of Mars holds the sacred shield and spear of Mars, which were to be shaken when a general undertook command of a campaign in an attempt to wake the god. The structure itself is said to shudder at the times of momentous events. The shrine of Ops, however, is far more exclusive; only those of important religious rank or the Vestal Virgins were permitted to enter, it being an incredibly sacred structure.
